A Sad Day |
Today is a sad day for the 18-30 somethings of Philadelphia who like to hear a good variety of music, intelligent well-spoken DJ's, new and local bands, and the best ever morning show on the radio (Preston & Steve). My favorite radio station, Y100 suddenly went off the air last night (www.y100rocks.com--for a petition to bring it back). Along with it went some of the best DJs in the Delaware Valley. Although, according to the website there, they have set up an online station where the Y100 DJs will be broadcasting from their own homes. That, however, will last about as long as it takes them to get a job at another station, I fear. . .loyalty is all well and good until your first set of monthly bills come in. Preston & Steve are already headed to 93.3 WMMR ("The Rock Station") after their 6-month no-competition contract is up in August. I'm certainly going to be tuning in to that station more often as soon as they are on the air.
Radio One, in the infinite wisdom of a huge conglomerate that has no idea about the local community it serves, replaced Y100 with yet another hip-hop station. Yeah, we needed one more of those. I really don't get the radio industry at all. Preston & Steve had just won a national award for their show, Y100 itself had 500,000 listeners and had no direct competition playing the same mix of music. Now the new station has lined itself up to directly compete with 3 other stations in the area. The chances of the petition doing anything are pretty slim, too, unfortunately.
I, for one, think that the coolness factor of the Delaware Valley has dropped at least 40% with Y100 out of the picture. Good luck out there, guys. |
